BAVO moderates the workshop 'Between centers and peripheries' at the conference 'Maastricht: Lieu de Passages?' with Therese Kaufmann, Olivier Kramsch and Angela Melitopoulos.

Thursday 14 – Friday 15 May
Maastricht: Lieu de Passages?
— two-day conference by Maastricht University, Hogeschool Zuyd and the Jan van Eyck Academy in cooperation with the Municipality of Maastricht. Topic: ‘Maastricht - European Capital of Culture 2018’
— AINSI, Maastricht, NL

The aim of the two-day international conference Maastricht: Lieu de Passages? is to critically investigate the conditions of possibility for Maastricht to become European Capital of Culture. By inviting researchers, policy makers, cultural workers, artists and entrepreneurs at this early stage, the conference wants to actively contribute to shaping the direction this process takes.

The conference will address several themes: ‘Destination Maastricht’ is about the search for new imaginaries that the relative decline of industrial labour in Maastricht has led to; ‘A cultural DNA’ investigates the assumed cultural essence of Maastricht; ‘Urban Laboratories’ questions the city as a place of experimentation and innovation; ‘Cultural Capital and Institutional Change’ raises the question how Maastricht can further develop its various kinds of ‘cultural capital’; and ‘Between Centers and Peripheries’ negotiates the problematic status of the border.
Keynote speakers will be Greg Richards (cultural tourism, TRAM Research, Barcelona) and Hans Mommaas (urban culture and planning, University of Tilburg).
