CULTURAL ACTIVISM TODAY

Seminar: Social Design

project: CULTURAL ACTIVISM TODAY

author: BAVO

status: announcement

BAVO will deliver a key-note speech at the European Social Forum in Malmö at a seminar on the political pitfalls of 'social design'.

The lecture will be one of two longer presentations introducing a day-long seminar with the titel 'Social Design'. The other presentation will be by Thomas Hylland Eriksen.

The seminar will take place on 19 September and will start at 10 a.m. The venue is: Inkonst, Kulturhuset Mazetti, Friisgatan 15 B.

The thesis of the seminar is that contemporary design is purged of any lingering traces of resistance. The aim is to bring together people that are engaged with relevant projects and discuss examples of resistance within design. Participants to the seminar will be people working within areas of gender and design, sustainable design, social design, design and hacktivism, open source hard ware and so on.

The following quote from Hal Foster on design serves as a provocation and inspiration for the seminar:

"…the new 'political economy of design' is marketing culture, branding of identity and specularization of commodities. Everything—not only architectural projects and art exhibitions but everything from jeans to genes—seems to be regarded as so much design". It is under this sense of design that so many of the crimes against life under capitalism are committed. Contemporary design, is part of a greater revenge of capitalism on postmodernism."
