BAVO

BAVO recherche la dimension politique de l’art, de l’architecture et de l’aménagement spatial.

BAVO est un bureau de recherche fondé en 2002 par Gideon Boie et Matthias Pauwels et ayant un siège à Bruxelles et un autre à Rotterdam. Boie et Pauwels sont tous les deux nés à Bruges en 1975 et ont fait des études d’architecture (Hoger Architectuur Instituut Sint-Lucas, Gand) suivies d’études de philosophie (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam).

BAVO fait avant tout de la recherche fondamentale sur la dimension politique de l’art, de l'architecture et de l’aménagement spatial. Ces dernières années, il s’est surtout penché sur la restructuration des quartier fragilisés, le rôle des artistes et architectes impliqués dans le développement urbain, le nouvel engagement du secteur de l’architecture, la battage publicitaire autour de la ville créative et la néolibéralisation de la politique d’aménagement urbain.

BAVO fait ensuite part des résultats de ses recherches à des spécialistes en la matière et organise des débats et symposiums sur le sujet. Et enfin BAVO intervient dans le débat public sur les développements sociaux et les discussions qui portent sur des sujets avec lesquels il a des affinités. Dans ces interventions, il tente de redéfinir le rôle traditionnel du théoricien.

BAVO est un bureau indépendant. Il initie ses propres projets, mais collabore également avec des instances publiques et privées. En 2004 et 2005, le collectif a opéré pendant deux ans sous l’aile du Département Théorie de l’institut de recherche interdisciplinaire Jan van Eyck Académie à Maastricht.

Les dernières publications de BAVO sont: Cultural Activism Today. The Art of Over-identification (Episode Publishers, 2007) et Urban Politics Now. Re-imagining Democracy in the Neoliberal City (NAi Publishers, 2007).
